Festival of Fried Fish of Camogli

Queuing for fried fish: Sagra del Pesce Camogli

A festival of superlatives: in mid-May, the municipality of Camogli at the Golfo Paradiso near Genoa adorns with the sagra del pesce, the annual festival of fried fish.
The city lords set up a gigantic pan with a radius of 3.80 metres - and fill it with 3000 litres of oil.

There are three tons of fish - gutted, turned in flour and put in round baskets, which then swim in boiling oil. If you stand in a good queue, you get a good portion - last year, 30,000 portions were sold.

The roots of the festival date back to the 15th century: Even then, fish was gently caught off the coast of Camogli with the help of a permanently installed net - the Tonnara - and part of it was distributed to the needy population.

Whereas tuna was the main fish at that time, anchovies, sardines, octopus rings and gamberi are now put in the cardboard bowl that visitors eat at the harbour, pier or promenade.
